things to do
At an elevation of over 3000 feet in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Western North Carolina, Nantahala Lake is the second-highest lake east of the Mississippi River. The lake feeds the Lower Nantahala River, world famous for its wonderful white water rafting and kayaking, and the lake is considered one of the most pristine and pure lakes in the entire Southeast.
With 29 miles of shoreline, the lake offers recreational opportunities that include swimming, boating and skiing . Fishing is also popular – largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, trout, salmon, catfish and many different species of pan fish are found here. The Lake is also a great base from which to explore the many other recreational opportunities in the area, including hiking on the Appalachian and Bartram Trails and fly fishing, kayaking, and rafting on the Nantahala River.
Dining is available just down the road at Lakes' End Marina or in Franklin (30 mins), Andrews (20 mins), and Bryson City. The cabin features an indoor fireplace, an outdoor firepit and a deck, and a gas grill. We have a private dock on the lake (a short walk down the hill from the house and across the road) where you'll find kayaks. High-speed Starlink internet is provided as well as smart tvs with access to your personal streaming services. Below you'll find information about recreational opportunities in the area.
Lakes End Marina
Just a half mile down the road from the cabin, Lakes End Marina offers dining options as well as rentals for pontoon boats, kayaks, canoes, and paddle boards.
Hiking
Hike on the Bartram Trail (.2 miles from the cabin) or on the nearby Appalachian Trail. Wayah Bald is one of our favorite sites. It's less than an hour from Joyce Kilmer Memorial Forest.
Nantahala Outdoor Center
A short drive away you'll find lots of things to do at Nantahala Outdoor Center, including rafting and dining. NOC is on the way to Bryson City and Cherokee, NC.
Fly Fishing
In addition to lake fishing, schedule a trip on the Nantahala River for some exciting fly fishing. We recommend Turning Stones Fly Fishing outfitters.
